It’s been a fairly quiet February weather-wise. We’ve had a little bit of snow, a little bit of rain, but its mostly been pretty mild and precipitation free. We’ve only had 26cm of snow so far this month, with more than half of that (16.6cm) falling just over the last couple of days. Luckily it’s been mixed in with rain, so it doesn’t seem like that much fell (though shovelling it was a pain, it makes for heavy snow!)

The forecast is calling for more snow, around 5cm before the month comes to a close. Though with temperatures hovering around +3C over the weekend, hopefully it will melt as soon as it hits the ground.

Quiet January

I haven’t forgotten to update this website, it’s just been a very quiet January for snowfall. It even seems like we’ve had more rain than snow, though that’s not the case. So far this month we’ve had 32.2cm of snow compared to 47.6mm of rain. The 32.2cm of snow pales in comparison to the 80.8cm we had last January and is closer to the 42cm we had in January 2008.

A New Decade, More Snow!

December has come and gone an in its wake it left 57.4cm of snow on the ground of our fair city. December 31st rounded out the year and the decade with a 7cm drop. Not to be outdone, January has given us so far 9.4cm on the 1st and 4cm on the 2nd. More snow came down on the 3rd and the 4th but we’re still awaiting the official count on those days. A few more centimeters is expected to fall over the next couple of days. What a way to bring in the new year!

What A Way To End the Decade!

What a way to end the decade! This last week has brought varied types of weather to close out the noughties. We’ve had sunshine, we’ve had rain and a bit of snow. Between Boxing Day (Dec 26th) and the 27th we had 20.2cm of rain fall on our capital. This greatly reduced our snowbanks, but also made driving a very slippery affair.Intermixed with the rain was a bit of snow; 1.8 cm fell on Boxing Day, and a trace amount on the 27th. The 28th brought us 2.4cm of snow and 0.4cm on the 29th.

According to the weathermen and weatherwomen, a couple of centimeters will close out the 2000s, and 5-10cm will help usher in the new year and the new decade. If their estimates are correct, the next 7 days will bring snow on a daily basis, with 26cm to 37cm by the time next Wednesday rolls around.

Christmas Snow

So the weatherman lied to us and we did get snow before Christmas. Never believe those 7 day forecasts folks. 5.4 cm fell on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Over Christmas and Boxing Day 10-15cm is expected to come down, making sure that we’re getting a white Christmas.

Dashing Through the Snow

We’ve had a bit more snow drop on us this week. We had 5cm fall on Sunday, 3cm on Monday and 0.6cm on Wednesday. This brings up the total to 33.6cm for the month/winter season. Its a far cry from the 93.4cm we had on the ground at this time last year, and the whopping 148.8cm we had at this time in 2007. The forecast over the next 7 days doesn’t call for any snow, so lets hope it stays that way. There’s just enough snow for this to be a white Christmas.

Numbers Are In

Environment Canada has finally released the numbers for the snow dump we received a couple of days ago. A whopping 22.2cm of snow fell on our capital. Strangely enough, my snowbanks are 3 times that height. Its very similar to the 22cm we received on Dec 9th 2008. Hopefully this isn’t a sign that we’ll have as much snow as last year.

First Big Dump of the Winter Season

Hi and welcome back to Snowfall! Looks like we’re going to have quite another winter ahead of us. It had been a quiet December so far, but today Mother Nature wanted to remind us of who was in charge. Between the 9th and the 10, a full 25 to 30cm is expected to have fallen upon our fair Nation’s capital. This snow storm is one year to the day of last year’s first big snow fall (Dec 9th 2008) , which dumped 22cm of snow on us that day.

April Snow Still Going and Going

Snow is still falling in this nation’s capital, but luckily not enough that we have to break out the snow shovels again. On the 4th and 5th some trace amounts fell to the ground. Environment Canada considers trace amounts to be anything less than 1 cm. On April 5th we were hit with a whopping 2cm and another 2.4cm fell on the 6th.

More snow, mixed with rain, is expected to fall today. Fortunately, this is the last day in the forecast that’s calling for any type of precipitation. Clear skies and sunshine is expected over the next 7 days, with temperatures hovering around the 7C mark. We can hope that we’ve seen the last of the falling white crap.

April Snow

I was hoping that I was done posting to this blog for this snow season. We had a good stretch of over a month without snow. In fact, most of the snow had melted away by mid March, which is a little unusual. Mother Nature however reminded us today that snow season isn’t over yet, and will probably remind us a few other times this week. Luckily it went up to +5C in the afternoon and it rained, so the snow didn’t stay very long. A guestimate would put the snowfall in Orleans to be 1cm or less.
