More February Snow

The good times couldn’t last. We got some more snow on February 22nd. A full 3.8cm to be exact. With more snow predicted this week it looks like its not time to put away our shovels just yet, no matter how much we would love to.

First Big Snow of February

Can you believe we didn’t get any significant snow so far this February until the 18th? It was so warm and sunny on occasion this month that my snowbanks actually went down by a couple of feet. This is the kind of winter that I don’t mind. I didnt forget to update this website, there’s just been nothing to report!

We had 4.2cm fall on the 18th, and 2.6 on the 19th. Previous to those 2 days, we received a laughable 0.2cm on the 1st, 0.6cm on the 6th and again 0.6cm on the 9th.

This gives us a grand total of 8.2 centimeters so far this month. This is peanuts compared to the 76.1cm that fell last year between Feb1st and the 19th. What a nice change. :)

Snow, Hey oh

If you’re a snow lover then you must have loved all the snow that we’ve gotten in the past week. There’s been tons of the light fluffy stuff that fell onto our fair region in the last few days. Wednesday we say a total of 18cm fall, and another 6.2cm on Friday. With drifts the amount that was actually in our driveways was much higher. These last couple of snowfalls have allowed us to break the 200cm mark. The total after Friday’s snow is now 202cm for this season.

Anyone else realize that we almost always have the bigger snowfalls on Wednesdays this year? I noticed it last week. Every time there’s a big snowfall it also happens to be garbage day for my street. Coincidence? I’m not so sure!

A Little Fluff

light snow Over the last week we’ve had a few smaller snowfalls.  On Wednesday we had 2.6cm fall. It was very light and fluffy, almost like cotton balls. A shovel full of the stuff felt like the shovel was still empty. Ah, how I wish they were all like that!

It also snows on the 22nd and 23rd, with 0.4cm and 0.8cm respectively.

I know it hasn’t snowed as much as this time last year, but my snowbanks are bigger and taller than they were last year. I guess we haven’t had as many snow melting days.

Counting The Days Until Springtime

SNOWBANK

The last few days brought us some more snow. Its now to the point where I can’t lift my shovel high enough in some parts. I just keep telling myself that there’s only a couple or so months to go before it all starts to melt away. We were greeted with 10.2cm of snow on Sunday and a little under half of that on Monday with 4.8cm.

A Light Sprinkle

On January 13th a light sprinkle of 4.6cm covered the region. I wish all snowfalls were like this. I find it shoveling snow relaxing when there’s not a lot of it. Though it was cold with the thermometer hitting -21 and over -30 with the wind chill. There’s no snow expected until next Monday, but the freezing temperature will be around until the weekend.

First Blizzard of 2009 2: Electric Boogaloo

As the evening approached, the snowfall started to temper down a bit, as did the winds. Three is the amount of times that I’ve had to shovel the millions of snowflakes from my driveway so far today. As much as some of it was hard work, I know it will be nothing compared to tomorrow morning. That’s when I expect the most evil of man created machines to pass by, the demon spawn metal on wheels that we call the snowplow.

Added Jan 8th@12pm:

After everythins was said and done, a total of 22.4cm fell onto our fair city yesterday.

First Blizzard of 2009

Mother Nature is gracing us with the first blizzard of 2009. After a quiet 5 days of no snow, I found myself staring at my driveway which covered with a white blanket of crap. They are calling for 15-20cm of snow before its all said and done, but with the high winds, I had up to 15 inches and not centimeters of snow and its not even close to being over yet.

Though we saw a lot of snowfall in December, it did not surpass the snow dump we had received in December 2007. We finished the month with 85.2 cm of snow, whereas in December 2007 we had a whopping 121cm of snow dumped in our fair Nation’s Capital.

Holiday Weather

icy_roads.jpgThe last week brought all kinds of weather to the National Capital region. Everything from snow, rain, sunshine, high winds,  freezing temperatures and almost hitting the double digits in the plus side of the thermometer. Its been a strange week indeed.

December 21st brought us over 13cm of snow when everything was said and done. With the winds, a lot more ended up being shovelled from driveways. The 22nd and 23rd combined brought a laughable 2cm of snow. On the 24th we got hit with 4.4cm of snow a whopping 8mm of rain. The late evening and early Christmas morning gave us some high winds reaching up to 60km/h. Luckilly the high winds helped to evaporate the water on the streets, but it still made the late night drive on country roads a little nerve racking.

The warm weather on the 27th and 28th helped to thaw out some snow, but it turned our barely plowed side streets into huge skating rinks.

We were snowfall free from the 24th to the 29th, which was a welcomed change. Late in the evening on the 29th and early on the 30th snow covered the ground again with approximately 3cm of snow falling.

More Snowflakes Falling On My Head

I had forgotten that today was the first day of winter. I’m guessing Mother Nature wanted to mark this special occasion with more snow. An unofficial 20cm fell during the day and another 2cm in the evening. During the afternoon, winds reached up to 90 km/h.

The snowplow passed in the afternoon, which was really surprising. Being a side street in the suburbs of Ottawa, we usually don’t see a snowplow for days after a big dump. I’m happy that they came that early, instead of waking up tomorrow morning and having to shovel the mountain of snow left behind by the plow, all while rushing to get my wife to work. Luckily my neighbour came out and chewed away at the mountain of snow with his snowblower.
